City of Chios

The city of Chios, often called "Chora" is the largest city of the island with a population of 29.000. It is the administrative, cultural, educational and commercial center of the island, as well as its most important port. It is built in the middle of the east coast, from where the Asia Minor coastline is visible. Archaeological evidence indicates that the island has been inhabited since 6.000 B.C. The city of Chios was built by the Ionians a little before 1.000 B.C.

During its 3.000 – year history the city has been through periods of prosperity and decline and nowadays Chios is a vivid city with various economic, maritime and commercial activities. Despite its transformations due to the 1822 catastrophe, the 1881 earthquake and extensive post-war rebuilding, apart from the sites of archaeological interest, the city has a lot of sites of architectural, cultural and recreational interest not only in the city center but also in several of the peripheral neighborhoods.

The Castle

The Castle of Chios lies north of the town centre. Its main entrance (Porta Maggiore) lies at the South end. There is another entrance at its North West side (Portello).

Chios Island

Volissos

Volissos is the largest village of northwest Chios, the capital village of Amani area. The area of ​​Volissos is an ideal destination for those who love nature.

Mesta

One of the most beautiful villages of the island and at a 35km distance from the town. Mesta is a medieval village, which has been preserved as a monument.

Kampos

One of the most distinctive areas in Chios. It is a unique residential complex, where the natural environment is in total harmony with the local architecture.

Mavra Volia Beach

Mavra Volia beach consists of three successive bays with deep dark blue waters. The black pebbles and wild scenery is a result of the volcanic activity of the distant past in the area.

Trachili Beach

Trachili beach is located just 5 kilometers from the village of Mesta, in the area of ​​Mastichohoria. Its main characteristic is that it consists of two small bays separated by a small strip of land.

Nea Moni

Nea Moni, the most important medieval monument in Chios, is a monastery complex of the 11th century. The monastery is protected by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Monument.
